This article describes the role that philosophy has in the process of establishing astrobiology as a legitimate science. Focusing on concepts such as life and habitability, we seek to show how the analogy contributes to astrobiology being a scientific discipline. We argue that the notion of habitability adequately clarifies the role played by philosophy.
